Microsoft has just entered a part of the laptop market where Apple has dominated for years.
At its October 7 event, Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, a high-end Windows laptop designed around NVIDIA’s new RTX Spark platform. Starting at $2599.99, the machine is aimed at creators, developers and AI professionals who want serious computing power without moving to a desktop workstation.
And Microsoft isn’t hiding who it wants to compete with. The company is even offering eligible MacBook Pro owners up to $1,000 in additional cash back when they trade in their Macs for a qualifying Surface Laptop Ultra in the United States and Canada.
That tells you everything about Microsoft’s ambition with this machine.
A Very Different Kind of Surface Laptop
Surface Laptop Ultra is not just a Windows laptop with a quicker processor.
The device is built by Microsoft using NVIDIA’s RTX Spark Superchip, featuring NVIDIA’s Blackwell RTX GPU along with an NVIDIA Grace CPU and unified memory. The highest configuration supports up to 128GB of unified memory, and Microsoft reports that the system can power locally AI models with more than 120 billion parameters.
Microsoft also claims up to one petaflop of AI performance under its specified FP4 testing conditions.
That’s a lot of processing power on a laptop computer.
Microsoft doesn’t want all those “demanding” AI tasks to be sent to the cloud server, but rather processed directly on the computer.
Now that’s where it gets interesting!
The $2599 Laptop Is Really About AI
This isn’t really the story of the screen or the design. It is local AI.
Microsoft is taking Windows down a path it calls ‘hybrid intelligence’. The concept is that while some AI tasks can be offloaded to the PC, when the need arises, more demanding ones use the cloud.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is designed to take advantage of this approach.
Developers can deploy their own AI models, play with AI agents and code tools without sending each step of their workflow to a remote server. The machine can also support the CUDA ecosystem and Windows AI stack, Microsoft says.
This might be a significant factor for developers and AI scientists.
But if you’re the typical user who relies mostly on Chrome, Microsoft Word, YouTube and social media, it might be hard to justify paying a few thousand dollars to get this feature.
The Display Is Also Serious
The Surface Laptop Ultra has a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with it.
The peak HDR brightness of the display is 2,000 nits, which is up to 25 percent higher than the HDR brightness of the MacBook Pro M5 Pro (as details listed in October 1, 2026) as per Microsoft.
The laptop also receives a bigger haptic trackpad, and according to Microsoft, it’s 30 percent larger than the trackpad on the Surface Laptop 8th Edition.
For creators working with photos, videos, graphics and other visual content, these features could make the Surface Laptop Ultra particularly interesting.
Microsoft Is Bringing Back the Ports
Apple’s laptop designs have frequently required a lot of adapters and USB-C.
Microsoft is taking a different approach.
The Surface Laptop Ultra features two extra USB-C ports, HDMI, USB-A, SD card reader and a 3.5mm headphones jack. Can also output up to three external 4K displays using compatible equipment.
There’s even a new magnetic USB-C charging system, Magnetic Connect.
If you are a photographer or a videographer, and you frequently move files from your cameras and other devices to your laptop, it may be much easier to have an SD card reader built into your laptop than a disk adaptor.
It is not a Giant Desktop Replacement.
Despite all the hardware inside, Microsoft says the Surface Laptop Ultra is less than 18mm thick and weighs under 4.5 pounds.
The company has also redesigned the thermal system which it claims to offer a thermal capacity of as much as 2.5 times that of the 15-inch Surface Laptop 8th Edition.
It’s an important factor because high-end processors and graphics cards will only help you out if your laptop can keep performance up without overheating or throttling.
Microsoft seems to be making an effort to make this a portable workstation and not just desktop-compatible equipment in a giant case.
But There Is a Huge Problem: The Price
Here’s where the MacBook Pro comparison gets tricky.
The base price of the $2599 Laptop is $2,599, but the more expensive configurations can be $19,999 and up.
The highest configuration is priced at $5,899, using a 20-core processor, 128GB of memory, and 1TB of storage, according to Reuters.
That’s some serious cash.
At that point, buyers aren’t simply asking whether the laptop is powerful. They are asking whether they actually need this much power.
The base version is also not directly comparable to the top-tier Macbook Pro models from Apple. Apple’s ecosystem, software support and processor architecture are completely different, while Microsoft’s machine is heavily focused on local AI and NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem.
So saying that Microsoft has simply “beaten” Apple would be an oversimplification.
Microsoft Is Going Straight After MacBook Pro Users
Perhaps the boldest part of the announcement is Microsoft’s own messaging.
The company’s tagline is “Break up with your MacBook,” and it’s offering up to $1,000 in extra cash back for MacBook Pro trade-ins.
Microsoft must think some Mac users have a good reason to make the move.
But there’s a particular audience that might take the bait: developers and AI practitioners.
With NVIDIA CUDA access in Windows and significant local GPU and unified memory resources on the RTX Spark platform, they have a strong platform for NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem.
That may be a significant benefit to people who wish to try out bigger AI models on their own equipment.
Could It Actually Make the MacBook Pro Look Outdated?
It all depends on how you use your laptop.
In terms of the most important features, Microsoft’s new machine offers a lot of support for local AI, NVIDIA GPU acceleration, CUDA, expandable storage and many physical ports, making it an interesting challenge to Apple’s professional laptops.
But if you already live inside Apple’s ecosystem, use macOS-specific applications or simply want a premium laptop for everyday productivity, the argument is less straightforward.
The Surface Laptop Ultra doesn’t automatically make the MacBook Pro obsolete.
That’s what it means to say, Microsoft is no longer considering AI merely as an add-on to Windows. Microsoft is developing hardware with the concept of strong AI directly on the personal computer in mind.
Final Thoughts
The $2599 Laptop is Microsoft’s most aggressive attempt yet to challenge the traditional definition of a professional laptop.
It integrates NVIDIA’s RTX Spark platform, up to 128GB of unified memory, local AI support, a bright 15-inch screen, and a variety of ports and a new cooling system into a machine that’s still less than 18mm deep.
But the price means this isn’t a laptop for everyone.
For AI developers, creators and professionals who can actually use its hardware, the Surface Laptop Ultra could be one of the most interesting Windows laptops of 2026.
For everyone else, a cheaper Surface or MacBook may make much more sense.
The bigger story is that Microsoft has officially challenged Apple in a new area: local AI computing.
And with Microsoft openly asking MacBook Pro owners to switch, the laptop war may have just entered a very different phase.
