Apple is reportedly collaborating with Samsung to create a groundbreaking “micro-curved” OLED display for the 2027 iPhone, marking the device’s 20th anniversary. This new screen will feature a bezel-free, quad-curved design, offering a thinner, brighter, and more energy-efficient display. While rumors suggest the inclusion of under-display Face ID and camera technology, Apple’s primary focus appears to be achieving a seamless, all-glass design that redefines the iPhone’s iconic look.

A Major Display Upgrade for the iPhone XX/20
For its 20th-anniversary model, potentially named the “iPhone XX” or “iPhone 20,” Apple is planning a significant display overhaul. According to supply chain leaks from China, the company is working with Samsung to develop an “equal-depth quad-curved” panel. Unlike Samsung’s earlier “waterfall” displays with dramatic edge curves, this micro-curved design aims for a bezel-less aesthetic while maintaining image quality and improving usability, such as swipe gestures and hand comfort.
Micro-Curved Displays: Not Exactly New
While Apple’s approach is innovative, micro-curved panels themselves aren’t new. Many Android devices already use similar technology, where the glass curves on all four sides, but the display panel underneath remains flat. This design combines sleek aesthetics with practical functionality, offering the best of both worlds.
The Tech Behind the Display
The iPhone XX/20’s display is expected to adopt COE (Color Filter on Encapsulation) technology. By eliminating the traditional polarizer layer—a “pol-less” design—Apple can create a thinner, brighter screen that consumes less power. To address the absence of a polarizer, Apple will likely use advanced anti-reflective coatings and a “crater-shaped” light diffusion layer to ensure uniform brightness.
The All-Glass Vision and Remaining Challenges
Apple’s ultimate goal is to deliver a hole-free, all-glass iPhone. However, integrating under-display Face ID and camera technology remains a significant challenge for the 2027 flagship.
What’s in a Name?
If Apple’s past naming conventions are any indication, the 20th-anniversary iPhone could be called the “iPhone XX.” However, with John Ternus now leading Apple’s hardware division, it might simply be named the “iPhone 20.” Whether the name is decided by Tim Cook or his successor, one thing is certain: the 2027 iPhone will be a milestone in Apple’s history.
