Google has begun a new chapter in the laptop market. The company has been working on Chromebooks for years, and now launched a new series of laptops with the power of AI via ChromeOS and Gemini.
Googlebook laptop is also a new, high-quality laptop designed for those who wish to have their computer synced to their Android phone, and have AI technology at the core of their daily working experience. According to Google, the new platform is built with the Android technology stack but with desktop foundations built from ChromeOS, in order to provide a laptop experience specifically focused on Gemini Intelligence.
Google is collaborating with a few big laptop manufacturers to facilitate a multi-device launch. Googlebook is the first to feature a variety of hardware options from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo, with buyers being able to choose between different designs and configurations, but with the Google software experience at the core.
What Is Googlebook?
Googlebook is Google’s way of reinventing the concept of an Android laptop.
It is an idea based on the actual use of technology today says the company. You may begin composing a message or learning on your Android telephone and then finish it on a laptop.
Googlebook laptop aims to make this transition easier.
Google doesn’t want the phone and the laptop to be two distinct versions: rather, it wants them to run on a common Android platform.
Google isn’t going away from the desktop web experience either. The new platform features the desktop version of Chrome and millions of Android apps via the Play Store.
Premium Hardware
Google’s new laptops are aimed at the high end of the budget Chromebook space.
The first machines are made of high quality materials such as aluminium, magnesium alloy and carbon fiber. The displays vary in resolution from up to 2.8K OLED, to haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards depending on the models.
Googlebook laptops are powered by Intel and Qualcomm’s most advanced processors, and feature specialized neural processing units that can perform over 45 trillion operations per second. Google says the devices can provide up to 14 hours of battery life.
Memory configurations are also different from maker to maker. For instance, Google has announced in Australia that the lineup will begin with 16GB of RAM, and there are some variants with up to 32GB of RAM.
Google is also re-introducing its Glowbar feature. The exterior light will turn on at laptop start, show battery charge and will provide Animations when interacting with Gemini.
Gemini Is at the Center
The biggest difference between Google’s new laptops and traditional Chromebooks is the company’s emphasis on artificial intelligence.
Googlebook is built with the computing experience in mind. An interesting one is called Magic Pointer.
With Magic Pointer, users can move their cursor in a particular way to bring Gemini directly into the context of what they are doing on screen. Google claims that Gemini can read the text, images and context, which means that users can ask questions or complete some tasks without having to navigate their way between applications.
Another feature is Rambler, an AI-powered voice dictation tool. Rambler can not just convert speech into raw text, but also organize an unstructured stream of thoughts into useful writing, such as headings, checklists and action items.
This may be one of the more useful features of AI on the platform for those who frequently make notes, attend meetings, or brainstorm ideas.
Create Your Own Widgets
Google is also introducing a desktop customization capability for users, without having to program.
Create My Widget lets the user specify what the widget should look like using natural language. This description can then be used to generate a system specific widget.
Google stated that, for instance, users would be able to create a sports score widget or a countdown widget for a future event.
With some work, developers can go much further. Developers will also have access to a full Linux terminal environment, and Googlebook is home to Google’s AI agent development platform Antigravity. This translates to not being a platform for browsing or simple productivity tasks. Developers can use the development tools that are available for Linux, play with code repositories, and execute tools like Claude Code or the Antigravity CLI.
Android Apps and Desktop Software
App compatibility is one of the most crucial aspects of the new platform.
Googlebook combines the desktop Chrome browser and its extensions with Android applications from Google Play. Meanwhile, Google claims that users can also launch apps like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and CapCut.
The entertainment also goes into the mix. Users will have access to streaming services with offline viewing, as well as Android games, and Google states that all purchases will come with a free year of GeForce NOW.
This may make the new laptops an even more versatile option than the stereotypical Chromebook, which is a browser-based computer.
Security
Google is also putting considerable emphasis on security.
The new platform features the security architecture brought to ChromeOS, such as Google’s Titan hardware root of trust, defense-in-depth security and automatic on-device malware detection.
Googlebook also introduces a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor, which Google says is the first one of its kind in the laptop category. The technology is employed to isolate a Linux environment, but still give users a complete terminal.
For advanced and developers that combination may be very useful as they can have a powerful development environment separated from the main system.
Googlebook Price and Release Date
Google has announced the price of the new laptops starts at $899 in the United States. There is an additional 12 months of Google AI Pro included in each device that gives Google’s cutting-edge Gemini tools and 5TB of cloud storage to eligible users. There are also extra services for the buyers, such as 3 months of YouTube Premium, and offers on Adobe software.
Pre-orders opened on September 21, 2026, through the Google Store, Best Buy and selected retailers.
The first devices should be available for purchase at U.S. stores on Oct. 4, 2026. Availability is October 5 in Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland, France, Germany and Australia.
The announcement doesn’t mention Nigeria and so the Nigerian buyer should not assume that the October release means it is available in Nigeria at this stage.
So is Googlebook worthy of attention?
The new laptop category matters because it marks a change from Google’s previous Chromebook strategy.
Chromebooks have been known for being cheap and having just a browser. Googlebook is seeking to accomplish something much larger: high quality hardware, Android apps, desktop software, artificial intelligence agents, developer tools and deep integration with smartphones.
The phone-to-laptop connection may be especially attractive for Android users. Developers will find the provision of a full Linux terminal and Antigravity to be a more serious computing environment than many may have envisioned with Google’s previous use of Chromebooks.
The biggest question will ultimately be how well all these features work together in everyday use. The spec sheet is impressive, but how successful Googlebook will be is going to hinge on whether it actually saves users time – or just introduces more AI capabilities to the OS.
Google is also guaranteeing software support and feature downgrades for 10 years, which could extend the lifespan of the platform significantly compared to many traditional laptops.
