Sennheiser has unveiled the Momentum 5, a premium pair of over-the-ear headphones designed with a repairable build and enhanced microphone technology for improved active noise cancellation (ANC) and call quality.
A Long-Awaited Update
The Momentum 5 headphones mark the first refresh of Sennheiser’s Momentum line in nearly four years, following the Momentum 4. Despite the long gap, the updates are relatively modest.
Design Tweaks and Longevity
While the overall design remains familiar, there are subtle changes, such as a redesigned logo on the fabric headband and metal plates on the earcups, which likely house the microphones. The standout upgrade is the addition of a replaceable battery, offering the potential for extended product lifespan.
Audio and Noise Cancellation Improvements
The Momentum 5 retains the 42mm drivers from its predecessor but delivers significantly improved ANC. Sennheiser claims the new headphones offer three times stronger noise cancellation in mid-range frequencies compared to the Momentum 4. This improvement is thanks to the inclusion of eight microphones, double the number found in the previous model. A transparency mode is also available, allowing users to hear external sounds when needed.
Battery Life and Charging Options
The headphones boast an impressive 57-hour battery life, slightly less than the 60 hours of the Momentum 4. Real-world usage may vary based on individual settings, but the performance remains exceptional. Battery status is displayed via five LED indicators, and charging is done through a USB-C port, which also supports wired playback. Alternatively, users can opt for the 3.5mm aux jack located next to the USB-C port.
Advanced Features
The Momentum 5 comes packed with modern features, including spatial audio (Dolby Atmos with head tracking), support for AptX Lossless Bluetooth codec, Snapdragon Sound, and Bluetooth 5.4. Sennheiser plans to upgrade the headphones to Bluetooth 6.0 and LE Audio via a firmware update. Both physical controls and touch controls are available on the right earcup for user convenience.
Carrying Case and Accessories
The headphones are housed in a flat, hard-shell case with a pocket and slots for the included USB-C and 3.5mm aux cables. The case is large but designed to accommodate the headphones when laid flat.
Pricing and Availability
The Momentum 5 headphones are priced at $399.99/€399.90/£329.90 and will be available in Black, White, and Denim starting June 30. They are slightly cheaper than the Sony WH-1000XM6, which launched at $450 but is currently available for $398 on Amazon.
