Microsoft pulls Copilot from smart TVs following controversial rollout

Microsoft’s AI assistant is leaving the living room almost as quickly as it arrived. In response to complaints of Copilot appearing on some smart TVs without permission, an LG notification has announced the end of its support for these devices. Now Microsoft has said so, leaving yet another short-lived AI experiment in its wake.

Microsoft’s endeavor to make its AI assistant a part of the living room is already nearing an end. Copilot will be removed from the LG and Samsung smart TV lineup on Dec. 1, 2026, just two years after the companies announced they’d be adding the assistant to their TVs.

The news first broke via an on-screen notification seen by Windows Central’s Zac Bowden on an LG webOS TV. The message, entitled “Notice of Microsoft Copilot Service Termination,” says that Microsoft had made the decision to phase out Copilot functionality for smart TVs, and that it could become unavailable soon. Microsoft has since confirmed that deadline—1 December—on its official support page. Copilot will continue to be accessible via web browsers, computers and mobile devices.

Copilot, an interactive feature, was introduced on compatible TVs in 2025, offering movie suggestions and responses to on-screen queries, as well as conversational support. However, not everyone appreciated having another AI assistant in their home. Earlier in December 2025, LG also had to deal with criticism over an LG webOS update that added a new Copilot shortcut that users had initially been unable to delete, as Notebookcheck noted at the time. It was later confirmed that the feature is a browser shortcut and the company later agreed to make it removable.

Microsoft hasn’t provided any official reasons for removing Copilot from smart TVs, and there’s no sign that the initial negative feedback led to this move. But the transition is for the company to focus more of its AI activities on productivity and business.

For viewers who never felt the need to ask a chatbot what to watch next, Copilot’s departure is unlikely to be much of a loss.
