Apple has decided to join the foldable smartphone market, and it’s joining with one of the largest design overhauls of the iPhone in years. The company announced at the launch event on 9th September 2026 that it had unveiled its first foldable smartphone, which will feature a bigger workspace than traditionally found in an iPhone, but with a small form factor.
The iPhone Duo is a big change for Apple. Apple has gone beyond just upgrading the iPhone’s processor or camera to something even better, but has redefined the user experience of the iPhone. It expands into a massive screen for multitasking entertainment and productivity, but does not reduce the size of the outer screen when it is not in use.
A New foldable design.
The most prominent attribute is the foldable design. The device is compact when closed, measuring approximately 5.4 inches from the outside diameter, and Apple claims that is about 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. When opened up, it provides a bigger 7.6-inch (50% bigger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max) inner display.
Both displays have the same aspect ratio, so the content seamlessly moves between the closed and open modes. Apple has also integrated ProMotion technology, an Always-On display and ProMotion up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The inner screen surface has a special anti-glare and anti-reflection nano-texture finish. This also helps reduce the crease on the display that is typically seen with foldable displays, Apple notes.
With the screen fully opened, the phone measures 5.2mm thick, the thinnest version that Apple has ever released for the iPhone. It is made of Grade 5 titanium and available in two colors: Star White and Night Sky.
Built for Multitasking
Apple is not just using the bigger display as a larger video screen. The company has updated the iOS 27 to leverage foldable technology.
Multitasking allows several applications to be running at once, which makes working more convenient, e.g., browsing the Internet and taking notes at the same time, comparing products online and working with documents. Games, video or other content is also given a lot more space on the larger display.
It may be especially appealing to those who wish to have the flexibility of using a tablet and don’t want to carry their phone and tablet.
Apple has also announced that Apple Pencil support for the USB-C will be available later this year 2026. This will allow users to make notes, draw and annotate on either display.
Performance and Battery Life
The device runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip under the hood. The processor will offer high-end performance as well as meet the high thermal demands of a thin, foldable phone.
Apple has equipped the device with a custom vapor-chamber cooling system and a dual-battery architecture. The battery is expected to deliver all-day power, and testing by The Verge estimates video playback time at up to 31 hours using the larger inner display.
It also supports quick charging with Apple stating it can charge 50 percent in roughly 20 minutes, with wired charging. Wireless charging comes with MagSafe as well.
Camera System
But even with the odd-looking design, Apple has paid attention to photography. Another highlight of the phone is its dual 48-megapixel rear camera, which it can use to make the best of both its outer and inner screens.
The foldable design also offers some fun photo opportunities. The outer screen serves as a preview for users when they take selfies with the main cameras and the folding mechanism enables the phone to be positioned in various ways and used for hands-free selfies.
Also, a camera below the display on the inner screen to preserve the big, continuous screen.
There are a number of compromises, though. The foldable, in contrast to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, has no variable-aperture main camera or the same lineup of professional camera controls.
Lock screen with a touch instead of with Face ID.
The move of using biometric security is one of the more surprising ones made by Apple.
This device has Touch ID fingerprint sensor instead of Face ID. This enables Apple to save on putting a conventional face ID sensor system in the front of the foldable screen.
The phone also has an under-display camera, and Apple Watch will allow its user to unlock the phone as well.
Bringing back Touch ID on a flagship iPhone is sure to spark some debate, particularly with those who have gotten used to the Face ID.
Price and Release Date
Probably the most significant worries for many people intending to purchase this kind of a vehicle will be the cost.
It costs a whopping $1,999 in the United States, starting with the 256 GB version. Storage will go up to 512GB, 1TB and up to 2TB, providing users with enough space for their apps, images, videos and other gigabytes of files.
Pre-orders for the device are said to start on October 16, 2026 followed by a release on October 23, 2026. It will first be released in over 70 countries and regions, and then released in other markets later.
This makes it much more costly than the standard iPhone 18 Pro as well as even more expensive than Apple’s high-end Pro Max models. But, the buyers are paying for an entirely different form factor and not just a more potent traditional phone.
Why Apple’s Foldable is worth the money?
This is definitely not a budget-friendly phone, with the price tag of $1,999. It’s marketed as a high value item for those who seek the newest technologies and are prepared to pay to get them.
The most significant benefit it has is versatility. You can have a standard outer display for fast jobs and a big 7.6-inch screen if you require more room. That flexibility might make the premium worth it for users who regularly work on multiple tasks, read documents, watch video content, edit documents or use their phones for work.
Yet, customers that primarily use their phones for social media, messaging, photography, and everyday browsing might prefer the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max, which are both cheaper.
Apple’s Biggest iPhone Design Change in Years
The arrival of Apple’s first foldable marks an important moment for the smartphone industry. Samsung and other Android manufacturers have already spent years developing foldable devices, but Apple’s entry could significantly increase mainstream interest in the category.
The company is betting that its combination of hardware, iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, premium materials and ecosystem integration can make foldable phones more appealing to everyday consumers.
Whether the device becomes a major success will ultimately depend on how well it handles the practical challenges of foldable phones, including durability, battery life, software optimization and the high price.
