The foldable market is evolving, and 2026 is shaping up to be the year of compact, wide-display devices. These foldables, with 3:2 or 4:3 aspect ratios in tablet mode, are gaining traction. Following Huawei’s release of the Pura X Max, Samsung is preparing to launch its own “wide fold” model, reportedly named the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Apple is also expected to join the foldable race with its first foldable iPhone, likely arriving in September. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is rumored to be working on a similar design. These devices share a common feature: a wider, more compact body that unfolds into a tablet-like display, reminiscent of an iPad Mini.
Samsung’s Slimmest Foldable Yet
Internal testing at Samsung suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. Its standout feature? An ultra-thin design, rumored to measure just 9.8 mm (0.39 in) when folded. For comparison, Apple’s upcoming iPhone Ultra is unlikely to match this level of thinness.
Earlier leaks showed a rough prototype of the “Galaxy Z Wide Fold,” but a new hands-on video reveals a much more polished design mockup. The device looks closer to a finished product, though some design elements may still change before launch.
Slimmer Than Ever
When unfolded, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is said to be just 4.3 mm (0.17 in) thick—thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge, which measures 5.8 mm (0.23 in) at its slimmest point (excluding the camera bump). Samsung appears to be sticking with a dual-camera setup for this model, while Xiaomi is reportedly opting for a triple-camera system, similar to Huawei’s approach.
