Tenku has launched the Pocket 8 ultra-compact laptop in Japan, equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen display with an impressive pixel density of 283 PPI. The 1.43-pound machine sports an octa-core Alder Lake-N CPU, along with 16 GB of LPDDR5 memory.
Micro PCs have carved out a niche among fans of small form factor (SFF) systems, and Japanese brand Tenku is no stranger to this space. Their latest addition, the Pocket 8 ultra-compact laptop, expands their lineup with a device designed for portability and functionality.
Tiny Display, Big Impact
Unlike standard laptops with 13-inch or larger screens, the Pocket 8 features a compact 8-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200. While the screen size may seem small, it delivers an impressive 283 PPI pixel density, surpassing even premium devices like the M5 MacBook Pro.
Performance: Efficient, Not Extreme
The Pocket 8 is powered by an Intel Core i3 N305 Alder Lake-N CPU, featuring 8 cores, 8 threads, and a 3.8 GHz boost clock. Graphics are handled by an Intel UHD iGPU with 32 EUs based on the Xe architecture.
While it’s not a performance beast, benchmarks like Cinebench suggest it can handle everyday tasks such as web browsing, media consumption, and light productivity with ease.
Compact Design and Features
Given its size, the keyboard is understandably small and may not offer the most comfortable typing experience. A trackpoint replaces the traditional trackpad due to space constraints.
For storage and memory, the Pocket 8 includes:
- 512 GB M.2 2280 SSD
- 16 GB LPDDR5-4800 RAM
The laptop also offers a solid range of connectivity options:
- WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2
- Dual USB Type-A (USB 3.2 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2)
- USB Type-C
- Mini HDMI 1.4
- microSD card reader
- 3.5 mm audio combo jack
Weighing just 650 grams (1.43 pounds) and measuring 20 x 13 x 1.8 cm (7.8 x 5.1 x 0.71 inches), the Pocket 8 is highly portable. It also features a 3,800-mAh battery, a 360° hinge, and a 10-point touch display for added versatility.
Availability and Alternatives
The Tenku Pocket 8 is currently available in Japan for 94,800 Yen (approximately $608 USD). A US release seems unlikely, but those interested in ultra-compact laptops can consider the GPD MicroPC 2, which offers a similar form factor and is priced at around $770 on Amazon US.
