Samsung has begun rolling out One UI 8, its Android 16-based update, to the Galaxy S22 series, marking the final major upgrade for the 2022 flagships. The update brings stability improvements, refreshed apps, and the latest security patch, but skips the new Galaxy AI features seen on newer models. With this rollout, the S22 lineup officially reaches the end of its promised OS support cycle.
The last major software update into the Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra has started to roll out to the device proprietors around the world. The Samsung One UI 8 update, which is the last official release of the Android operating system, is currently being launched, relying on Android 16. The update has been observed to show up to those users in Europe and India as a large update of more than 3 GB also containing the latest September 1, 2025, security patch. This will be rolled out slowly to additional markets in the next days and weeks.
It is a mixed blessing because it is actually the first One UI 8 update, and the Samsung promise of software support of the Galaxy S22 line. The phones released in 2022 with Android 12 and the transition to Android 16 finishes the four key Android updates Samsung promised the series. This policy is in comparison with the newer seven-year update promise of the company towards more recent flagship models such as Galaxy S24 and S25 series, and it appears not likely that the Samsung S22 will suddenly receive a longer lifespan.
The next major disappointment to users is that this One UI 8 update is not accompanied by any of the new Galaxy AI capabilities. It is more strange that the S23 FE that has all the AI additions omitted uses the same Exynos 2200 or Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset that the S22 family utilizes. This leaves the owners of S22 not only with the latest operating system but deprived of the newest intelligent software tools of Samsung. Major OS updates are completed, though, which does not mean your Galaxy S22 is out of service, as the devices at minimum will receive security patches over the next year.
This security support will continue until sometime in 2026.
