Microsoft has officially terminated software updates for the original Surface Duo, which was released in September 2020. This decision includes the discontinuation of Android version upgrades and security patches. Despite its initial promise of three years of Android updates and security patches, the Surface Duo only received updates up to Android 12L, falling short of expectations for a device with a $1,399 price tag.

Similarly, the newer Surface Duo 2, launched in October 2021 with Android 11, also offered a commitment of three years of software support. It received the Android 12L update in October, but Microsoft has confirmed that it won’t receive further Android version upgrades and security patches after October 21, 2024. Whether Microsoft will release additional Android OS upgrades for the Surface Duo 2 before the end of support remains uncertain.
